Update: Amy MacKinnon has generously offered a signed, hardcover copy of Tethered for this giveaway. So I'll be giving away two copies of this great book, one paperback ARC and one signed hardcover. I recently received two advance copies of Tethered by Amy MacKinnon. I'm devouring my own copy of the book (in between doses of Tylenol Cold & Flu) and thought I would offer the second ARC to a reader here at Bookish Ruth. (Please note that the ARC has a different cover than the cover image posted here.)
Here's a description of the book:
Clara Marsh is an undertaker who doesn’t believe in God. She spends her solitary life among the dead, preparing their last baths and bidding them farewell with a bouquet from her own garden. Her carefully structured life shifts when she discovers a neglected little girl, Trecie, playing in the funeral parlor, desperate for a friend.
It changes even more when Detective Mike Sullivan starts questioning her again about a body she prepared three years ago, an unidentified girl found murdered in a nearby strip of woods. Unclaimed by family, the community christened her Precious Doe. When Clara and Mike learn Trecie may be involved with the same people who killed Precious Doe, Clara must choose between the stead-fast existence of loneliness and the perils of binding one’s life to another.
I love the fact that the reader gets a look at a fairly unusual profession in Tethered. Leave a comment here for one chance to win. For an extra entry, tell me a title of a book you've read that featured a character with an unusual job. For three extra entries, link to this post on your blog. The contest will run until October 16, 2008 and I'll announce the winners the next day.

I'd love to read this. I just finished A Guide to the Birds of East Africa and the librarian in it takes people on a weekly walk to birdwatch. This is set in Nairobi, Kenya and it's a very enjoyable story. I will be posting my review any day . Please enter me. Thank you.
Tethered looks like a very good, if unusual, book to read. I'd love to have a chance to win an ARC.
I read a book called A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore. (you should check him out. probably the most hilarious author i've read) The main character, Charlie, is a father and he is a Death Merchant. That's his job. He goes around collecting these soul vessels when people die. then he sells them to new people in his antique shop. ha-ha.

have a great weekend!

Posting about this at J. Kaye's Book Blog next week! :)
I'm having a hard time thinking of a fiction book that is not sci-fi with an unusual job. My first thought was "Crystal Singer" from the Anne McCaffrey book of the same title. It's one of my all time favorite Anne McCaffrey books. I loved the idea of combining music with precision crystal cutting. Every time I read it it makes me wish I had perfect pitch and an eidetic memory (which are job requirements for being a Crystal Singer).
tethered! i read about this on another blog recently it sounds really good i would really love to get a chance to read it : )
um...a book i read with a character that had an unusual job? i can't really think of a really unusual one but in the five people you meet in heaven, the main character works fixing the rides at an amusement park, i don't know why but i find that to be a little bit unusual

Please count me in! I recently read a mystery, SUSPICIOUS MINDS, where the main character cleaned houses after murders.
Don't enter me! My ARC showed up in the mail this week, and I'm looking forward to reading it! Sounds like you're enjoying it. Hope you feel better soon!
Nice book giveaway! Would love to read it!
This sounds very intriguing. I was thinking of The Invention of Hugo Cabret. He lives in a train station and keeps the clocks wound :)
Sorry you're still under the weather. Enter me in your contest, please.
What a striking cover that has! Too bad the ARCs don't have the same one.
I just finished a memoir by an neurosurgeon. Her point seemed to be that she was extraordinarily special because of her profession, unfortunately I thought she was just annoying.
This sounds completely unusual and intriguing. I'd love to read it. As for an unusual profession in a book that I've read, I recently finished one called The Suicide Shop. The characters ran a shop which specialized in all manner of supplies which were guaranteed to help you kill yourself. It was nuts!

Sounds intriguing. I blogged about the giveaway here: http://2kidsandtiredbooks.blogspot.com/2008/10/giveaways.html
This sounds really interesting! As far as weird jobs go, Carol Shields springs instantly to mind. One of the main characters in THE REPUBLIC OF LOVE is a folklorist, while the other hosts a late-night talk show. And I haven't read it yet, but I know the main character in LARRY'S PARTY designs mazes for a living.
This year I've read The Undead Kama Sutra who's main character is a vampire private detective. I've added your giveaway to my blog Reading With Monie. Thanks!
I just posted about the contest, kinda, and gave you a little award!
This does sound good! Enter me please! I'm trying to think of a book with a character with an unusual profession . . . Hmm. I just started reading a memoir where the author's father is decorator by day and a psychic healer by night. It's nonfiction, but I thought that was pretty unusual. The book is called Walking Through Walls by Philip Smith.
Oh I would love to read this book!! Thank you for hosting this giveaway!! I think the most unusual character job, although it would be fun, is Thursday Next in the Jasper Fforde series. She is a spec-op who investigates wrongdoings inside classic novels lol.
I would love to be entered for Tethered, it is on my wishlist! I also posted your giveaway on my blog-thanks:)

This looks like a fascinating book. I find the cover art really intriguing- hopefully the face of the ARC isn't disappointing, because that image is beautifully haunting. I once read a book about a man who captured wild birds to take stop-motion photos of them in flight, then released them again. It's called I Went Into the Woods.
Don't forget the chicken soup! I'd love to read TETHERED. Thank you for the chance, and I hope you feel better soon!

This looks like an intersting read and I'd love to be entered to win a copy. Thanks! awalworth19@gmail.com.
oooh, I tried to get this book elsewhere and failed - yeah for another opportunity! One of my favorite books featuring a character with a strange job is The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde (and its sequels!), featuring Thursday Next, a literary detective. I linked to this post on my blog, on the right sidebar - http://needmoreshelves.blogspot.com/. Thanks!
Please enter me. This sounds great. I linked to it here as well:

As for a novel where someone had an unusual job...
Phenomenal Girl Five by A.J. Menden...she's pretty much a superhero, and that's one unusual job.

Sounds very interesting! I would love to read it!
I've heard good things about this one and would love to read it!
I saw *Tethered* over at Literarily's "Mailbox Monday" post and was curious about it. I'd love a chance to win!
Unusual occupation? How about inheriting a "dry cleaner" that turned out to be a front for a prostitution ring? That was the set-up in *Shining City* which I read/reviewed this summer.
A signed hard-back copy?? amazing. she's so nice :)
This book sounds interesting. I recently read one of Gail Tuskiyama's older books where the main character, a 9 year old girl in China worked in a silk factory stirring the boiling water with the cocoons in it. Eeeek what a job!

Wow! It really does sound exciting. I would like to win it too.

Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
This book looks really good and had caught my eye when reading about it on another blog. One of my ancestors was an Ostrich Feather Dyer, does that count? Also Millroy the Magician by Paul Theroux, opening wierd food restaurants. I live in the UK so may be too far away to be entered and I won't be offended if that is the case.
This sounds like a great read. Please enter me. I will also get a giveaway post started and link to your giveaway. Thanks!
Hey Ruth!

Sounds good...I wanna win!
The story line of the main character living in solitude, with a job that deals mostly with non-living people. The twist of the little girl who is lonely and her possible connection with Precious Doe makes it even more interesting. Please enter me in your drawing. Thanks, Cindi

I read Eragon where the protogonist is not aware that he is a dragon rider. I think that is an unusual job!
Count me in!

I have blogged about it Here!
This looks like a real page turner. I would love to read it. A book with the main characters in an unusual profession...can't think of any off hand. What about Drop City by T. Coraghessan Boyle. I don't know if it is a profession persay, but he leads a hippie commune.
This is something that I would love to read. Sounds unusual and gripping. I'd like to be entered. Thank you. :)
1st Entry - I'd like to be entered, sounds like a great read.
2nd Entry - Strange profession, the youngest son in "Run" was an ichotologist (sp?) (study of dead fish).
Thank you for this opportunity!!

I wish I could come up with a book featuring a character with an usual job but of course wouldn't you know it, I'm drawing a complete blank! haha....
I was wondering if you've finished this book yet. And if you have, did you enjoy it??
