Here's a description of the book:
Clara Marsh is an undertaker who doesn’t believe in God. She spends her solitary life among the dead, preparing their last baths and bidding them farewell with a bouquet from her own garden. Her carefully structured life shifts when she discovers a neglected little girl, Trecie, playing in the funeral parlor, desperate for a friend.
It changes even more when Detective Mike Sullivan starts questioning her again about a body she prepared three years ago, an unidentified girl found murdered in a nearby strip of woods. Unclaimed by family, the community christened her Precious Doe. When Clara and Mike learn Trecie may be involved with the same people who killed Precious Doe, Clara must choose between the stead-fast existence of loneliness and the perils of binding one’s life to another.

I read a book called A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore. (you should check him out. probably the most hilarious author i've read) The main character, Charlie, is a father and he is a Death Merchant. That's his job. He goes around collecting these soul vessels when people die. then he sells them to new people in his antique shop. ha-ha.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a fiction book that is not sci-fi with an unusual job. My first thought was "Crystal Singer" from the Anne McCaffrey book of the same title. It's one of my all time favorite Anne McCaffrey books. I loved the idea of combining music with precision crystal cutting. Every time I read it it makes me wish I had perfect pitch and an eidetic memory (which are job requirements for being a Crystal Singer).

um...a book i read with a character that had an unusual job? i can't really think of a really unusual one but in the five people you meet in heaven, the main character works fixing the rides at an amusement park, i don't know why but i find that to be a little bit unusual

What a striking cover that has! Too bad the ARCs don't have the same one.
I just finished a memoir by an neurosurgeon. Her point seemed to be that she was extraordinarily special because of her profession, unfortunately I thought she was just annoying.
This sounds completely unusual and intriguing. I'd love to read it. As for an unusual profession in a book that I've read, I recently finished one called The Suicide Shop. The characters ran a shop which specialized in all manner of supplies which were guaranteed to help you kill yourself. It was nuts!

This sounds really interesting! As far as weird jobs go, Carol Shields springs instantly to mind. One of the main characters in THE REPUBLIC OF LOVE is a folklorist, while the other hosts a late-night talk show. And I haven't read it yet, but I know the main character in LARRY'S PARTY designs mazes for a living.

I just started reading a memoir where the author's father is decorator by day and a psychic healer by night. It's nonfiction, but I thought that was pretty unusual. The book is called Walking Through Walls by Philip Smith.

This looks like a fascinating book. I find the cover art really intriguing- hopefully the face of the ARC isn't disappointing, because that image is beautifully haunting. I once read a book about a man who captured wild birds to take stop-motion photos of them in flight, then released them again. It's called I Went Into the Woods.

This book sounds interesting. I recently read one of Gail Tuskiyama's older books where the main character, a 9 year old girl in China worked in a silk factory stirring the boiling water with the cocoons in it. Eeeek what a job!

This book looks really good and had caught my eye when reading about it on another blog. One of my ancestors was an Ostrich Feather Dyer, does that count? This looks like a real page turner. I would love to read it. A book with the main characters in an unusual profession...can't think of any off hand. What about Drop City by T. Coraghessan Boyle. I don't know if it is a profession persay, but he leads a hippie commune.
